Jeanne Moreau plays a serial killer in this one, but this tale of revenge is staged by Truffaut with a levity approaching Kind Hearts and Coronets-- in other words, to say what the movie is "about" is to reduce it beyond recognition. Bernard Kauffmann's domineering score does indeed give weight to the film-school canard that The Bride Wore Black is an hommage to Hitchcock-- from the first orchestral blast, I found it impossible to tune out the flashbacks to any number of Hitchcock films, and it was hard for me to overcome the power of that music to convince me that I was watching one. But without the score, I saw little resemblance to the master of suspense-- to a major Truffaut fan like me, though, that is not such a bad thing. The suspense, for example, was not laced with edge-of-the-seat anxiety, it was more a matter of delightful curiosity about what artful form of mayhem would ensue next, as Julie Kohler checked the next name off her "to do" list of vengeance. The ending has a humorous twist that is pure Truffaut-- in terms of "closure" it is also very satisfying, as all comedic revenge-film endings ought to be. Highly recommended.

This is an enjoyable miscellany of scenes revolving around a school, its students and their teachers and parents. It's militantly episodic, and the absence of plot elements is such a deliberate choice, I found it easy to relax and watch the loosely strung-together anecdotes without prior expectations-- spend some time in one small French town and see that world from a kid's perspective. Of course it harks back to Les Quatre Cents Coups, and of course the collection of young characters includes a misfit with delinquent tendencies-- but it doesn't really play like a colorized remake. On the other hand, the absence of a plot puts some pressure on the director to extract "meaning" from the scene where the troubled character's life reaches a crisis-- a teacher assembles his students to talk with them about it, and his dialogue does get drawn out and preachy. The blatant injection of a summation with a "message" is the one flaw, for me at least, in the anecdotal flow-- it isn't too implausible and doesn't last that long, so dock a half star from the usual 7 or 8 for a Truffaut film, and enjoy!

Shoot to Kill
Starring Clancy Brown as Steve, a kidnapper/murderer, Steve steals two pounds of diamonds from Mr. Berger, a jewelry store owner. Berger is caught getting the diamonds and the police are involved. Steve takes Mrs. Berger hostage. Steve is on the run and goes on a guided hike. He kills everyone in the party and takes the guide, Sarah (Alley) hostage. Her fiancé, John Knox (Berenger) and agent Stanton (Poitier) pursue him in this action-packed movie.

The human Zoo (2000)
This documentary is often humorous in its otherwise clinical approach to how people judge others, find ways to get along, or become managers and followers. Dr. Mark McDermott and Dr. Phil Zimbardo launched a three-day experiment called "The Human Zoo" and used hidden cameras to observe and explain how a group of strangers interacted during what the subjects know is a psychological experiment, although they do not know what the purpose of it is, nor that they are being surveyed almost constantly. Immediate friendships and hostilities are watched by the professors; these scenes are inter-cut with other researchers exploring similar psychological dynamics. Actor/comedian Charlie Skelton, among others, cooperates to test British citizens who do not know they are being filmed.
