In 1911-1912, Robert Falcon Scott of Britain plans to penetrate Antarctica and be the first to reach the South Pole. Unbeknownst to him, Roald Amundsen of Norway, his original plan to conquer the North Pole thwarted by Cook and Peary, decides to race Scott to the South Pole in the Antarctic summer of 1911-2. Scott is portrayed here as an anti-hero - petty, poorly judging of men, animals, and conditions, and too proud of his Christian heritage to allow suffering of animals even when necessary. Upon hearing of Amundsen's challenge, Scott is reckless and makes ill-advised decisions. His Siberian ponies and motor sledges give out, and he and his men must carry the heavy sledges themselves to the Pole and all the way back to base. Meanwhile, the seasoned polar campaigners, the Norwegians, use dog power to make it the Pole more than a month before Scott's weary team. Amundsen returns safely to his base, but Scott's demoralized team is plagued by bad weather and mishaps of their own making..

Almanac of Fall

Possibly inspired by the existential play No Exit by Jean-Paul Sartre, this story about five people living in close quarters in a small apartment conveys the same angst as Sartre's well-known story about the nature of hell. Like the 1962 movie version of the play, Oszi Almanach is also garishly lighted, with scenes red-tinted on one side and blue-tinted on the other. Close-ups show a dermatologist's interest in skin, an example of the kind of bizarre abstraction that underscores the alienation in this film. A single, older mother owns the apartment, where she is tended by a nurse who has brought along a presumed lover. The sick woman's son lives there too, constantly thinking about how to get his hands on his mother's money. The last member of this unhappy "family" is a former teacher now down on his luck and out of work. The three men and the nurse are dependent on the sick woman, on her money and her apartment, just as she is dependent on them. Yet these individuals are two-faced, scheming, and prone to anger. Unable to break away and leave, at the same time they find no solace in staying -- making a difficult two hours of misery for the average viewer to take on without a therapist. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Housekeeping

ousekeeping or housecleaning is the systematic process of making a home neat and clean in approximately that order. This may be applied more broadly than just to an individual home, or as a metaphor for a similar "clean up" process applied elsewhere such as a procedural reform. It can also be called household management, which is the act of overseeing the organizational, financial, day-to-day operations of a house or estate, and the managing of other domestic concerns.

That Most Important Thing Love

A few days ago, I was asked by a reader, "What is the most important thing in life to you?" Since many of us may occasionally ask ourselves the same question, I thought it would be a good idea to share my answer with all our readers. By the way, you are also invited to ask me a question or suggest a topic for me to write about.

Shunpu den (1965)

Seijun Suzuki directed this hard-hitting account of a woman who volunteers to serve as a "comfort woman" (prostitute to the Japanese army) at the Manchurian front in 1937. Harumi (Yukimo Nogawa) is desperate to get out of Japan to escape the memory of a doomed romance. She offers to serve the Army in Manchuria, where the sadistic Lieutenant Narita (Isao Tamagawa) uses her violently and wants her as his private servant. However, Harumi has become infatuated with Mikami (Tamio Kawachi), Narita's subordinate, and they embark on an affair that would mean certain punishment for both of them if it were ever to be discovered. Diary Of A Prostitute was based on a novel by Taijiro Tamura, which was previously filmed (in bowdlerized form) in 1950 as Escape At Dawn. Director: Seijun Suzuki Writing credits: Hajime Takaiwa, Taijiro Tamura Produceer: Kaneo Iwai Original Music: Naozumi Yamamoto Cinematography: Kazue Nagatsuka Cast: Yumiko Nogawa, Tamio Kawaji, Hiroshi Cho, Hideaki Esumi, Shigeyoshi Fujioka, Kotoe Hatsui, Kazuko Imai, Tomiko Ishii, Sokoto Kasai

Καgεrοzα (1981)

The second of director Seijun Suzuki's wildly daring and much-acclaimed Taisho Trilogy, KAGERO-ZA, like its predecessor ZIGEUNERWEISEN, is set in Tokyo in the early 1920s. The haunting, episodic narrative follows a playwright and his growing obsession with a beautiful woman who floats in and out of his life. He first encounters her when she asks for his company on her way to the hospital, as she is afraid of the Chinese Lantern Plant vendor--the plant is said to contain female souls. He refuses, but his desire for the woman gradually overpowers him, so that by the time he realizes she is luring him to his demise, it is too late to stop her. The inner workings of the human psyche are featured in this study of relationships between different leading characters. The action weaves around playwright Matsuzaki (Yusaku Matsuda) -- who is sleeping with Shinako (Michio Okusu), a married woman -- and his other "lover," Ine (Eriko Kasuda), a fairly corporeal spirit. The film is set in 1926, when cinema was silent -- and that era is evoked in Kagero-za. Director: Seijun Suzuki Producer: Genjiro Arato Screenwriter: Yozo Tanaka Short Story Author: Kyoka Izumi Cinematography: Kazue Nagatsuka Cast: Yusaku Matsuda, Michiyo Ookusu, Mariko Kaga, Katsuo Nakamura, Yoshio Harada, Eriko Kusuda, Ryutaro Otomo, Emiko Azuma, Hideko Okiyama

Based on an Ibuse Masuji short story, this delightful escapist drama is set at a hot spring resort providing sanctuary to people of vastly different backgrounds and personalities bounded by one thing: their common desire to not leave. The resort's patrons include a Tokyo woman (Tanaka Kinuyo) with a mysterious past who develops a brief relationship with a wounded soldier (Ryu Chishu). A comedic piece filmed and set during wartime Japan, Kanzashi makes a statement with its lightness.

Samυrai Βaחחers (1969)

Toshiro Mifune plays Yamamoto, a physically impaired 17th century Samurai, whose wife and child have been massacred in a war. He signs on to advise a warlord, believing that the fellow has the strength to kill off all of the rival leaders and unify the nation, but he quietly objects to the man's pompous arrogance, sadism and self-centeredness. The assignment succeeds triumphantly as the men, working together, vanquish every competitor across the land. The warlord then approves his request to wipe out a neighboring ruler with whom they've made a pact; Yamamoto kills him, and then stops the man's princess daughter from committing seppuku. He falls in love with the heiress, and she with him, but the warlord wants her as a concubine. Yamamoto agrees to this request out of devotion to his leader, and even convinces the young woman to obey the request. After she conceives an illegitimate child with the warlord, Yamamoto devotes himself and his life to strengthening the power and reach of Japan and spreading the belief that the child is the rightful heir to the throne. He thus ensures that the baby will grow up to become the ruler of a unified nation.

Μαchιbυsε (1970)

Japanese screen legend Toshiro Mifune bids farewell to the character he made famous in this tale of death and deception also starring Shintaro Katsu of Zatoichi fame. Hired to carry out a mysterious mission, Yojimbo (Mifune) is told to travel to a remote mountain pass and simply wait for something to happen. Upon arriving at a secluded tea house located at the top of a pass, Yojimbo stumbles into a tangled plot involving a shipment of shogunate gold, a gang of bandits, a shogunate officer, and a disgraced doctor.

Αrigαtô-sαn (1936)

Hiroshi Shimizus endearing road movie follows the long and winding route of a sweet-natured bus driver—nicknamed Mr. Thank You for his constant exclamation to pedestrians who kindly step out of his way—traveling from rural Izu to Tokyo. Romance and comedy occur, and tragedy threatens his passengers, a virtual microcosm of depression-era Japan.

Βіllу Lίаr 1963

his early work of John Schlesinger (Sunday Bloody Sunday, Midnight Cowboy) is very much of the "kitchen sink" genre of B&W British film in the 1960s. I think of this as Tom Courtenay's breakout role, but I see The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner predates this one by a year. I notice also Julie Christie was cast as a love interest in Doctor Zhivago, as in this film. That said, this really is a one-character spotlight study, and a tour-de-force performance by one actor. Seems silly to say this about a grey-hued rainy-day kitchen-sink drama-- but the ending was a bit downbeat, leaving me caring a little too much for this silly character. I mean, he does have the choice of just "snapping out of it" after all, right?

Νіаgаrа 1953 Hathaway

arilyn Monroe has never been shown to better advantage than in this film-- her song "Kiss" is spellbinding. She plays the wife of a WWII veteran suffering from what we'd call Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder nowadays, and her cure for what ails him is the stuff of film noir at its purest. The characters, the plot, the score and above all the setting, combine under Henry Hathaway's direction, to make an unforgettable film. For me it's one of those movies I watch every couple years, and one of a handful of Marilyn Monroe movies that keep her alive for all time.

Сul-dе-Ѕас 1966

What if Buster Keaton had directed The Petrified Forest? You know, I think I'll leave it at that. Chances are even the Polanski lovers out there haven't run across this one-- so what are you waiting for?

I Vίtеllоnі

This early Fellini film is easily the hardest one to find-- but it is the fully-realized work of a master. Whatever you mean when you use the term "Felliniesque," it can be found in this film. Once you have watched it, it's hard to see Scorsese's Italian films (Mean Streets, Goodfellas) in the same light.

Τһe Rосking Ηоrsе Wіnnеr 1949

This shamefully overlooked gem is a psychological thriller that has been called the best portrayal of coming-of-age anguish ever done. John Mills shines, and the juvenile lead John Howard Davies grew up to produce many quality offbeat comedy shows-- Monty Python, Steptoe & Son, The Good Life and Fawty Towers to name a few! If the brilliantly choreographed scene in Strangers on a Train where a carousel comes flying apart left you with an almost a phobic reaction to painted wooden horses-- this movie will finish the job!

Κіng Lеаr 2008 Iаn ΜсΚеnnаn

This is the international production directed by Trevor Nunn and shown in the U.S. on PBS. It stars the incomparable Ian McKennan as Lear, and that is enough reason to check this version out. I have preserved the act/scene structure, though I had to cut 5 scenes into clips, doing my best to wreak as little violence on the original as was done in the production, where much cutting was done. YouTube's 10-minute limit was my undoing-- the filmmakers' was our 21st century attention span. Nunn wisely left many a messenger in the wings with their speeches of reportage, no matter how poetic, even when they were about matters neither the characters nor the audience knew had happened-- the esthetic of our times has taught us that if it wasn't captured by the lens, it might as well not have happened. I could quibble about many, even most, but since this works beautifully as a movie, what's the use of complaining about alterations made in the play? I was more than a little irked by Nunn's apparent dislike of Shakespeare's way of marking the ends of scenes with rhyming couplets, bits of doggerel and other comedic bits of business, especially since these cut deeply into my favorite speaking part in the whole play-- the Fool. But I may be a little eccentric in seeing him as an alter ego of the lead character, Lear in negative as it were. To those of you keeping track of the numbers, Act IV sc 3 is not missing-- it was cut from the production. Scenes cut into two or more clips are marked by lower-case letters, for example, 5.3a, 5.3b, 5.3c-- in the text and the production, these three parts run as one continuous scene. When I say this works as a movie, I mean as a movie version of a Shakespearean play. For a more radically "cinematic" version liberated from expectations engrained in us by the ubiquity of Shakespearean poetry in our cultural idiom, try the 1971 Russian-language version translated by Boris Pasternak, directed by Grigori Kozintzev, and musically scored by Dmitri Shostakovich. Ι Wаlk tһе Lіnе 1970 Frаnkеnһеіmеr

This ironically-titled tale of an impeccably righteous man's seduction by a jailbait temptress can be enjoyed straight or as a send-up-- the white-trash melodrama is over-the-top, but ever so straightfaced. The upright, uptight sheriff is played by the notoriously wooden Gregory Peck, and Tuesday Weld embodies the wiggly, giggly minx as only she can-- the sex scenes between them are laugh-out-loud, but can also make your skin crawl. Peck lives in terror of being caught, Weld and her cartoonish parody of a toothless goober-grubbin sister-lovin hillbilly-moonshiner family keep a wary eye on the tense situation caused by the arrival of a "government man" on the scene, and the film's climax is at once harrowing and matter-of-fact. This outré confection is not, of course, to be confused with the 2005 biopic about Johnny Cash, though he does supply songs for the soundtrack.

Τһе Lаѕt Wаve 1977

"This is one of my all-time favorite films, and while it may move too slowly for some, it's well worth seeing. A corporate lawyer (Richard Chamberlain) is dragged into a case involving "city" Aborigines, and this is no ordinary case. OK, a man has died but it wasn't exactly a normal killing. There has also been a greater than average amount of rain lately, and the atmosphere of most of the film is somewhat claustrophobic & oppressive. The Aborigines are harboring a secret and refuse to spill the beans. This has a lot to do with white men making assumptions about "City" vs. "Tribal" Aborigines, and of course no Abo in the big city would practice tribal ways. Uh huh. Chamberlain is having strange dreams and he is somehow the key to what's happening, although no matter how many times I've seen this I can't quite grasp the exact connection. This is a very eerie and creepy film, and is a fine example of Peter Weir's ability to create tension out of nothing. The ending is a little ambiguous but I take it literally, it's the easiest way out and the scariest." (TheatreX on IMDB)

Lo Sсeiссo Вianco (the ωhite Sheiк) 1952 Fellini

Fellini's second film, and the first he directed alone. The surrealism and comedic tone that marked his work is already evident here-- as is his self-referential tendencies. A creative work about the creative process, in other words.

It is a chilling display of soullessness by both the director and lead actor Klaus Maria Brandauer-- it makes the hair on your arms and the back of your neck stand up, a clear sign that you are viscerally experiencing what you see. In retrospect, the reason horror stories like this come to life is that the protagonist and director are dealing with matters they know intimately, whether through direct experience or imagination so powerful it creates a type of reality. This is one of those movies that cling to you emotionally, that your memory harks back to on a cold rainy morning. "A German stage actor finds unexpected success and mixed blessings in the popularity of his performance in a Faustian play as the Nazis take power in pre-WWII Germany. As his associates and friends flee or are ground under by the Nazi terror, the popularity of his character supercedes his own existence until he finds that his best performance is keeping up appearances for his Nazi patrons." L uchino V isconti's first film! Hard to find and well worth watching-- better yet, download it and help keep it in circulation. Visconti is one of my favorites, right up there with Fellini and Truffaut. His sense of dramatic flow is very "sostenuto," to borrow a term from music-- wherever you cut into the narrative, there's always something quietly brewing, something about to happen. Visconti has a subdued, kinda "uneventful" quality and a slow pace, so what I just said might seem strange. I only discovered how tightly-woven and always-in-motion his narrative sense is when I started to break this movie up into clips-- and found out how difficult it is. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0035160/

Paisa

he Paisas are a people who inhabit a region over the northwest Colombia in the Andes.[1]
The region is formed by the departamentos (provinces) of Antioquia, Caldas, Risaralda and Quindío. Some regions of Valle del Cauca (north) and Tolima (west) belong to the cultural identity of paisas. The main cities are Medellín, Pereira, Manizales and Armenia.
The name of Paisa derives from the Spanish apocope of Paisano (one from the same country), although they are also known as "Antioqueños" (those from the old Antioquia that included the other Paisa provinces and that was a single administrative body until the creation of the Caldas State in 1905.) Although many refer to Paisas as an ethnic group (raza antioqueña or raza paisa), they are a part of the Colombians and Latin American peoples.
Paisas can be found in other regions of Colombia and the Americas where they have migrated. They have a particular way of speaking Spanish to the point that some writers refer to it as "español antioqueño".[2]
